BUTEX Working Groups

Please take the time to browse through information on our current working groups.

If you have any questions about any of the groups, or if your institution is interested in joining any group, please contact Angela Turton at info@butex.ac.uk.

The BUTEX Working Group

This national working group meets on a roughly termly basis, taking on a range of projects with the goal of raising the profile of outward mobility in the UK.

The group reports regularly to the wider BUTEX membership in order to highlight the latest initiatives in this area and to seek wider feedback and consultation.

The Working Group is currently involved in discussions related to the new tier 4 visa requirements, practical problems with the implementation of the 15% fee arrangements, the new UKHE international working group, risk assessment, and pre-departure activities.

The group currently comprises of members from the Universities of Sheffield, UCL, Nottingham, Westminster, Essex, Surrey, Sussex, Manchester, Leeds, Keele, and the Fulbright Commission.

If you have any questions about this group, or if your institution is interested in joining the group, please contact Angela Turton at info@butex.ac.uk.

UKHE International Unit’s Outward Student Mobility Programme

The UK Higher Education International Unit was created in 2007 to respond to the growing demand of UK universities for timely information on, and analysis of, all aspects of HE internationalisation.  BUTEX regularly hosts guest speakers from the unit to update members on its latest initiatives.

The Unit’s Outward Student Mobility Programme formed in July 2013 and Sarah Leach, BUTEX Chair, has taken a place on this group.

We look forward to continuing to represent the opinions and experience of BUTEX members through this forum.

If you have any questions about this group please contact Sarah Leach at info@butex.ac.uk.

Measuring Mobility HESA Subgroup

This group was set up to liaise with HESA and others in order to encourage the collection of data relating to outgoing UK students.

A recommendation paper on gathering data on study abroad has now been presented to the Post-2013 HESA review group and the group awaits a response.

If you have any questions about this group please contact Angela Turton at info@butex.ac.uk.

Fulbright co-operation on the promotion of short term study in the US

The BUTEX Chair has been invited to collaborate with the US-UK Fulbright Commission to develop a strategic plan for promoting US higher education in the UK.

The main areas being developed are:

  • Providing BUTEX members with better promotional materials on short-term study abroad in the US for prospective students.
  • Providing information to returning students on returning to the US for postgraduate study or internships.

If you have any questions about this group please contact Sarah Leach at info@butex.ac.uk.

THE BUTEX STANDARDS OF BEST PRACTICE

Over the next year, BUTEX will be working towards the publication of its first set of Best Practice Guides for the UK international education market.

The aim of the guides will be to provide a resource for staff working in the field of international education which will provide practical advice on a range of important topics. The overall tone will lean towards a focus on best practice, deliberately pitched in an inclusive way which can be relevant to institutions already achieving high levels of best practice and institutions moving towards this. This will be achieved by outlining general principals of best practice featuring case studies, together with sets of questions for institutions to ask themselves.

There will be an update session at the BUTEX National Symposium in July to feedback to members the results of the recent consultation exercise regarding priority topic areas and to take the project to its next stage.

If you have any questions about this group please contact Angela Turton at info@butex.ac.uk.
